Viola tricolor hybrid is a small short-lived herbaceous perennial sometimes used as an annual. Each tri-colored bloom has two erect purple petals, two horizontal yellow and white petals, and one broad down-pointing yellow petal. Purple streaks radiate from the flower's center. The edible flowers are singly borne on short stems above clumps of semi-evergreen oval leaves. Plants bloom year-round as long as weather is mild.

Give this hardy perennial fertile well-drained soil in full sun to light shade. Plant seedlings or seed in early spring or early fall. It does not bloom or grow well in hot conditions. In regions with harsh winters, give plants an airy winter mulch such as pine boughs. Use 'Helen Mount' as a winter annual in areas with mild winters and hot summers. Viola tricolor and its hybrids make wonderful plants for lawns, perennial borders, herb gardens, containers, and entryway plantings. They often self-sow liberally.
