Selenicereus validus is an attractive cactus with stems that branch at the base. Stems are pendant, rope like, up to 16 inches (40 cm) long, up to 1.2 inches (3 cm) in diameter with very fine spines covering exterior, stems cascade in waterfall form very easy. Nocturnal bloom opens at full darkness and stays open till late morning. Flowers are up to 5 inches (22 cm) long, white and gold, blooming in the warmer months from June to fall depending on your location.
Like most cacti, Cereus are fairly low-maintenance and hardy. Make sure they receive enough water without becoming waterlogged, especially during the summer, and fertilize them for best results. If the roots have become black or overly soft, the cactus could be experiencing root rot – cut away the affected parts and replant. Most gardeners interested in cacti should be able to cultivate these without much problem.
