Cactus species Pilosocereus fulvilanatus is a large tree-like cactus columnar to shrubby in growth form which can reach up to 12' to 15'ft. tall, or adopt a more shrubby appearance. The upright branches can reach 4" to 5" inches in diameter, in contrast to Pilosocereus fulvilanatus subsp. rosae, whose branches are thinner at 2-1/4" to 2-1/2" inches in diameter. This cactus has a distinctive sky blue-green appearance, due to the waxy outer layer that is particularly apparent near the tips of the branches. 4 to 7 ribs furrow the branches of this species, and the ribs are themselves lined by tightly packed cushion-like structures (known as areoles) from which spines grow. Dark brown felt and longer yellowish to brown spines extend from each areole; these structures are more hairy when producing flowers. The greenish, funnel-like flower tube extends from the areole, flowers are around 1-1/2" to 2-1/4" inches long. Distinctive, globular dark pink or purple fruits then develop with a heavily wrinkled appearance. An impressive columnar cactus in the desert landscape. Rare in cultivation.
